Our purpose is to promote well being, healthy living and self-management of health conditions.  Community health projects work with people having or at risk for chronic conditions such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease.  Media campaigns are conducted to educate the public about how lifestyle affects health.

First 5 Center

West County First Five Center

The West County First 5 Center offers free programs that help parents/caregivers nurture and support their children so they grow up healthy, happy, and learning. Our programs focus on parent education, early learning opportunities, family literacy, and tobacco education. Classes are for children ages 0 -5 and their parents/caregivers to participate in together. For parenting classes, we offer free childcare.

Our programs address the following four goals:
  •  To support attachment and bonding between parent/caregiver and child
  •  To increase child development awareness for the parent/caregiver so that parents/caregivers have a more informed understanding of children’s nature, etc, and can respond accordingly
  •  To provide fun and practical activities & concepts that the parents/caregivers can incorporate into their daily routines with their children
  •  To provide an environment that stimulates creativity and learning in children, as well as building community for children and adults alike

All classes are free for residents of West Contra Costa who have or care for children between the ages of 0-5, as well as expecting mothers. Spanish translation is available for all classes.  Classes meet once a week, and run between 4-10 weeks. Most classes are one hour in length. Please call us for the latest class schedule, or go to www.firstfivecc.org.

The West County First 5 Center is located at 2707 Dover Ave, San Pablo, CA, 94806. Classes are also offered at local community centers in Richmond, including The Nevin Center and The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center.

Let's Be Healthy!

Let's Be Healthy! is a health promotion project for the estimated 20,000-30,000 Russian speakers of San Francisco. The project, a collaborative project of Bay Area Community Resources and the San Francisco Department of Public Health's Newcomers Health Program, is intended to prevent chronic disease and improve the health and well-being of the Russian-speaking newcomer community with culturally and linguistically appropriate education and activities. Objectives of the project include:

  • Train Russian-speaking health advocates to become community health promotion leaders.
  • Launch a community-wide healthy living campaign for San Francisco's Russian speakers.
  • Conduct culturally appropriate educational sessions on physical activity and nutrition that help and encourage participants to adopt healthy lifestyles.
  • Facilitate liaisons between health care providers and patients to support self-management of chronic diseases.
  • Develop culturally appropriate Russian language materials on healthy living and chronic disease self-management.

RIDE Project

The RIDE project seeks to directly counter tobacco usage among youth, young adults and Asian Americans through an intervention employing the enormous popularity of the import scene. Priority issues are (1) secondhand smoke explosure, (2) sponsorship by tobacco industry, (3) cessation, and (4) prevention among youth.

The RIDE project brings together young Asian Americans from throughout the Bay Area and California with a love for cars and racing to protect both
their communities and the automotive scene from the tobacco industry. The RIDE project promotes young Asian Americans as advocates and leaders by transforming their participation in the car scene as a powerful way to make meaningful and proactive changes in their communities.
