Building Capacity to Effect Change in Communities

Encouraging Volunteerism

The SUNSET Russian Tobacco Education Project’s goal is to create healthier living spaces in San Francisco and San Mateo counties, particularly for low-income Russian- speakers who suffer disproportionately from tobacco related diseases. This year, we sought to reach our goal by advocating for smoke-free policies in multi-unit housing.

Three building managers we partnered with passed 100% smoke-free policies—a total of 28 units smoke-free!

Other News and Achievements include:

  • A bilingual MUNI bus ad that ran for three weeks, prompting calls from the public and renewed funding for two more years from the San Mateo County Local Lead Agency to expand our cause.
  • We've produced two bilingual brochures - one on secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing and the other in assisted living facilities. Our advocates printed letters to the editor in both Russian and English language media.
  • The State of California gave us excellent feedback on our program activities.
  • Our funding from San Mateo County was renewed for two more years.
